Hindi goddess Falu at Bowery Poetry Club

Bowery Poetry Club
308 Bowery, NYC
Friday, June 19th, 2009
10pm

"Vocalist on the rise" and "Indian Diva" are just the beginning of a vehement cascade of quotes and buzz around Hindi Singer Falu. Pouring talent, Falu has mastered the challenge of astonishingly blending Indian traditional ragas with Western popular music, giving birth to her band of the same name which plays music that they describe as Hindi Indie Rock. One of Falu's most stunning performances just happened a few days ago at the Time 100 Gala where she performed in front of the one hundred selection of Time Magazine's most influential people which not surprisingly included Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

On the other hand, her list of musical collaborations outstandingly includes hip artists like Wyclef Jean, Yo Yo Ma, Widespread Panic and Slumdog Millionaire film composer AR Rahman, among others.

A contemporary fusion of an earnest classically trained singer who could mantain perfecting her craft for up to 16 hours a day with a leak of legendary bands like U2, Ella Fitzgerald, Radiohead and the Beatles, Falu belongs to the precious list of gems in New York City.

GAIDA, LIZ LONGLEY AND CRAIG GREENBERG

Bowery Poetry Club,
308 Bowery, Manhattan
May 15th, 2009
10pm

Gaida and her ensemble: Levantine Indulgence

“[Gaida] improvised incantatory lines as an accomplished jazz vocalist might have done… [her] plaintive, gauzy vocals effectively disarmed listeners” - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Gaida is a vocalist and composer working at the intersection of the New York Arab and improvised music scenes. Her songs draw at once on classical Arabic music, Syrian folk traditions, and free improvisations that expand on traditional Arabic maqams (modes) to produce an original and highly personal style marked by great emotional intensity. An acclaimed singer from an early age, Gaida was born in Germany and raised in Damascus. Later she lived in Kuwait, Paris, and Detroit, where she received classical voice training at Wayne State University. Now settled in New York, Gaida works with leading music artists such as Amir ElSaffar, Brahim Fribgane, Arturo Martinez, Zafer Tawil, and Rufus Cappadocia. She appeared on Jonathan Demme's latest film, Rachel Getting Married, which featured one of her compositions and a performance with Robyn Hitchcock. She has subsequently performed with Hitchcock on several occasions in New York. She also recorded with Gillian Welsh and Alejandro Escovedo on Demme's previous film, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains. Gaida composed and performed an original song for the documentary film, The First Saturday in May.

Liz Longley

Longley's songs swell with honesty and genuine emotion that most of us are unable to admit to but recognize all the same.", declared "The Telegraph" of New Hampshire. Even music icon John Mayer, who surprised Liz and fellow Berklee music students when he broke into an impromptu rendition of Liz's song "Queen", has described her music as

"Gorgeous-just gorgeous!"

The internet has been equally effusive about Longley's music. Liz was voted the No. 1 all-time female vocalist on Garageband.com in both acoustic & folk categories. As a songwriter, she and Handy Blues award winner Jim Tullio, teamed-up to write the internet smash, "Naked Trees". The song became the No. 1 all-time song (amid 3,400 songs) in Garageband.com's acoustic S/S category in '06.

This past spring, Longley earned the Berklee College of Music Songwriting Division Achievement Award. Moreover, her song "Whatever Goes Up" was ranked the No. 2 song overall in the well-regarded competition. The song also garnered the all-time No. 1 spot on Garageband.com's folk chart for best melody and best lyrics.

Liz is often accompanied by guitar talent Sarah Zimmermann. The two team-up for engaging vocal harmonies and a rapport with audiences that is filling coffeehouses and venues throughout the region. Liz has performed at the Philly Folkfest, Club Passim's in Boston, Tupelo Hall in New Hampshire, and Philly's World Cafe. She has shared the stage with Nanci Griffith, Kenny Rankin, Lucy Kaplanski, Livingston Taylor, and Jonathan Edwards.

Craig Greenberg

Recently Hoboken Music Award nominated Craig Greenberg started his musical journey in the streets and bars of Barcelona and Chile. His music transmits a youthful spirit that doesn't seem to steady down for a while, he strikes a zippy energy that reminds you of one of the reasons why you love music: to jazz you up. Craig has performed in various stages around the world, just a few to mention Costa Rica and Spain, and has played around the US with artists like songwriter Jerry Joseph (Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome), Jackson Browne and Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos. He's also been part of the New York Songwriters Circle shows which have hosted artists like Gavin De Graw, Vanessa Carlton, Jesse Harris and Marc Cohn.

In September of '06, Craig's politically charged song "No Evasion" got selected as one of the top "Songs of the Times" on Neil Young's website (www.neilyoung.com), reaching as high as 87 out of 500 on a popularity ranking, alongside songs from artists such as Ben Harper, Kris Kristofferson, Crosby & Nash, Steve Earle, Son Volt, Todd Snider, and Bright Eyes.

In November of '07, Craig co-produced and released his first EP, entitled "The World and Back".

POPROCKS presents Violens and The King Left!!!!

April 26th, 2009
Bowery Poetry Club
2pm

Prepare yourself to see Violens and The King Left perform live in a setting you never expected to see them before. POPROCKS are family friendly concerts that invite hip mom and dads to take their kids with them to concerts that present top-notch indie artists and bands so they can interact altogether in a new musical environment. Kids have the opportunity to participate in a jam session with artists, which makes the whole experience very entertaining to both parents and kids.

VIOLENS

With synths that contrast rosy melodies and ornament speculating messages described in their lyrics, Violens made "Violent Sensation Descends" a phenomenon that spread within the blog scene and indie magazine reviews with the same effectiveness as a mortal virus. This New York-via Miami group of four recreates sounds that need to be touched and images that need to be heard, it is all part of the great play of the fantastic. An international class act, Violens proposes a reminiscence of 1960's British indie scene as a hallmark of their personality. They have recently opened for such bands as MGMT, Grizzly Bear and Deerhunter.

THE KING LEFT

Former upstate NY film students made a sweet career move and got together to create a band that is rapidly making history through the always crowded indie world: The King Left. They've already broken CMJ top 100 twice with songs "I Have to Let You Win (Stop Trying)" and "The Storm in a Teacup". Also, they've been listed in The Deli Magazine's top 10 of Emerging NYC Artists of 2008 and "Best Unsigned Bands" by Alternative Press. Their catchy appealing rock tunes have drawn the attention of bands like Tokyo Police Club and We Are Scientists.

Bowery Poetry Club Singer/Songwriter series!!

Finally, this Saturday March 14th the Singer/Songwriter series begin at Bowery Poetry Club!!

Check out Haale, Fionn O'Lochlainn, Heather Christian and DJ sets by King sponsored by Pasita Wine Bar. There'll be a free wine tasting!

10pm Heather Christian
11pm Haale
12pm Fionn O'Lochlainn

Haale's music consists of a blend of psychedelic rock, persian rythms, and deep thoughts that will blow your mind. Creative, artful, poetic and mature, Haale majestically combines the richness of different backgrounds and draws a mystical environment that almost seduces you into a hypnotic state of mind. Like a serpent that gracefully makes its way even through the most arid climates, Haale achieves with "No Ceiling" the status of "one of this year's most memorable releases": Boston Globe. Outstanding collaborations inlcude: Matt Kilmer (percussion) and Brent Arnold (cello).

Fionn O'Lochlainn is a guitar genius of the current generation. In a world where pop music is filled with electronic sounds and almost anything can be accomplished with a computer handy, Fionn tears apart the concept of conventional and delivers music that is so sparkling and refreshing that you'll definitelly crave for more. Accompanied with acoustic guitar, piano and mandola, he metamorphoses any stage into a theater play where emotions, characters and plot define themselves along with the sound of his velvety voice. He aesthetically epitomizes the new spirit of classic rock, soul and folk.

Most certainly, there is a killer left: Heather Christian. She is the one who'll break your heart. She is the one who'll grab your soul and scratch it, break it, fold it and then put it back together again. With her voice as innocent and immaculate as a hummingbird, she'll explore the toughest array of conducts displayed within human nature. Today you might find her singing of love, tomorrow of death. This ability in Christian to go charmingly to the places where others rather not, makes her an intimate delight to follow. If you listen to her, the only condition is that you let yourself give in a little, and maybe even listen to your own heart singing along with her almost classic piano.

And last but not least, DJ King will perform between sets. She is also the lead vocalist of Savoir Adore and plays a lot of 60's pop and French singers, as well as alternative 90's (Cocteau Twins) and newer artists like Blonde Redhead, Beck, etc. She recently performed early in the night of French Horn Rebellion shows.

It's Official! Bowery Poetry Club gig confirmed with Haale, Fion O'Lochlainn, Heather Christian and DJ King

This is a 100% worthy concert: Saturday March 14th, 10pm

Haale's band has played 150 shows in America, Europe, and Canada. Highlights include the Bonnaroo festival (07), the David Byrne curated series at Carnegie Hall, the Hillside Festival, Celebrate Brooklyn, SXSW, Mimi Festival in France, and the Firstworks Festival. The Boston Globe called the album, 'one of the year's most memorable releases.'

Fionn O'Lochlainn is a British artist who moved to NY to continue creating and performing his music. Among other press, Fionn received the following review from Time Out NY Magazine:
"We've heard few recent debuts as bold and provocative as Fionn Ó Lochlainn's Spawn of the Beast. Not only does he demonstrate a knack for observant songwriting, but he's an impressive guitarist and musters a vocal range that stretches from dry witticisms to power-crooning worthy of Jeff Buckley."

NY Times review on Heather Christian: "In one of her original pieces, “I’ll Fall Away,” she sings, “You can take it or leave it.” The feel of that song might be longing, but Ms. Christian’s delivery has the well-earned confidence of a woman who expects her audience to take it."

Besides, Pasita Wine Bar is sponsoring a wine tasting, so you get to hear great music accompanied with great wine!
